Lobbying the Virginia General Assembly and the Congress
The Virginia General Assembly convenes at our historic State Capitol in Richmond the second Wednesday in January each year, and meets for approximately two months, with a longer session in odd numbered years. It may re-assemble later for special sessions, as has been the case for the past two years.
Eagle Forum volunteers visit the legislators during the session and maintain a presence in the legislature. We have distributed homemade bread or candy to the legislative offices in recent years, accompanied by a message about issues of concern.
If you return our application form with an e-mail address, you will receive advance notice about these activities, and you are encouraged to participate.
You will also receive alerts about Committee Hearings of special concern, such as pro-life legislation and proposals that threaten tax hikes, private property rights, parental rights, education and many other concerns.
Lobbying the U.S. Congress
Virginia Eagles also lobby at the federal level. On April 26, 2006 members from our Northern Virginia chapter participated in the second annual "REAL Women's Voices" Lobby Day on Capitol Hill, sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony List, which raises campaign funds for pro-life women who are running for Congress.
Our members visited the offices of Senator George Allen and Senator John Warner to lobby on behalf of the Child Custody Protection Act (to outlaw taking a minor from a state which has a parental consent or notification law across a state line to obtain an abortion) and for a ban on human cloning.
VAEF alerts will keep you informed of important issues coming before the Congress and provide the telephone numbers and e-mail addresses you need to contact the relevant lawmakers.
There is an Eagle Forum leader in each Congressional District to assist you.
